Individuals are not permitted to file a chapter 7 or 13 bankruptcy unless they have attended a session of creditor counseling with an approved non-profit credit counseling agency. In that session, your financial circumstances are reviewed with a professional who will help you determine whether there are alternatives to filing bankruptcy. There are approved agencies that make this service available in-person, by phone or via internet. Upon completion of an approved credit counseling session, a certificate will be issued which must be filed with your bankruptcy petition.
